In Gamsen (near Brig) archaeological excavations were made. There you have found remains of millet, which are about 2000 to 2400 years old. It is the panicle millet. Thus, the cultivation of this millet in Valais is older than the rye cultivation. Rye has only been known in Valais for less than 2000 years.

There are other forms of millet. The millet was formerly cultivated in Central Europe. The tropical millet, also called millet millet, is much used in Africa. Today, in Europe, for example in the French Rhône Valley (south of Lyon), there are fields with this millet.
